Alicia McCarthy is an American artist (*1969) from Oakland, California. She is a representative of the so-called Mission School, a term coined by art critic Glen Helfand to describe the lowbrow folk of Bay Area artists Alicia McCarthy, Barry McGee, Ruby Neri, Margaret Kilgallen and Chris Johanson. The five were friends operating outside the traditional art market. In the DIY spirit of American punk rock, mixed with the spirit of outsider art and folk craft, they created a rustic urban aesthetic.

McCarthy mainly paints on found objects, she is drawn to the discarded, such as wood, which she incorporates into her work. Everyday objects are transformed into vibrant art with folklore and punk aesthetics. The colors McCarthy uses are rather pale and seem to come from the subconscious. In fact, McCarthy works in a meditation-like state. Her works carry the nostalgia of something already forgotten. (iriedaily)
